Doctoral Thesis
Over time, hospital buildings have undergone major transformations, however, the tendency towards isolation and introspection, rooted in their past, continues to be reflected in their environments, their users and the way they relate (or not) to their surroundings. The processes that emerge in the mediation landscape that is configured between them and their urban surroundings, however, do not arise only from their characteristics, but also from those of the neighborhood itself, which, in turn, has had its potential to associate with them in promoting health underutilized. Thus, this thesis aims to develop a tool to evaluate the integration between hospitals and their neighborhoods, applicable to the different stages of the equipment’s life cycle, enabling the identification of aspects that can optimize this relationship. For its construction, bibliographical and documentary research are carried out, which supports the theoretical and methodological foundation. To verify its applicability, tests are carried out in the São Vicente de Paulo and Álvaro Alvim hospitals, located, respectively, in the municipalities of Bom Jesus do Itabapoana and Campos dos Goytacazes, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. For the evaluation, data are collected from bibliographical, documentary and field research, in the period between August 2024 and February 2025. After testing, it was found that the proposed tool enables a broad and in-depth understanding of the hospital-neighborhood relationship, which favors the integrated planning and design of these subjects, minimizing the negative impact of one on the other and maximizing their potential, for the well-being of those who experience them.
