This Master's thesis proposes a critical reading of the work of Mexican architect Luis Barragán, with emphasis on the visual, narrative, and discursive strategies that contributed to his consecration within the canons of modern architecture. Starting from a suspicion toward the recurrent claim that his architecture is autobiographical, this research investigates how Barragán attained a privileged position of enunciation and which symbolic, visual, and rhetorical devices were mobilized in the process. Grounded in genealogy as a methodological approach, photographic elicitation as a provocative gesture, and the concept of the architecture of photography as an analytical procedure, the study is organized into six chapters, each opened by a photograph — or a set of photographs — that triggers the theoretical and critical discussions developed therein. Through these images, the reader is invited to uncover latent layers of meaning within the photographic realities orchestrated by the architect. By shifting the focus away from traditional readings, the investigation questions notions of origin, essence, and linearity, proposing an interpretation of Barragán’s work guided by the alterity of the image and in contrast to the regimes of visibility that shape its reception and persistence in the contemporary imaginary.
