Paradise BARRA DA TIJUCA: PAISAGEM COMO MERCADORIA NA CULTURA PAISAGÍSTICA CONTEMPORÂNEA

Dissertação de Mestrado

T he central focus of this research is to understand how, over the course of five decades (1970 to 2010), real estate market strategies shaped part of the landscape located between the sea and the mountains of Barra da Tijuca, in Rio de Janeiro. The thematic scope concerns the socio-environmental frameworks that were ins trumentalized by a real estate system that reinforced specific urban-landscape markers primarily directed toward its commercial interests. The forms, occurrences, and uses of this instrumentalization were driven by the logics inherent to modern consumption, which created space for the association between quality of life in the region, the desired standards of “socio-environmental security,” and an aesthetic grounded in modern and contemporary architectural models. This set of ideas, in itself, reinforces the consolidation of a culture oriented toward consumption, valorization, and the distinction of specific attributes of a landscape architecture aligned with the laws of the market. In this sense, the object of the study is the set of advertising models and methods that, in Barra da Tijuca, stimulated a practice oriented by what we conceptualize as the commodity-landscape. Based on these references, the research will focus on analyzing the strategies present in condominium advertisements, seeking to understand to what extent they influenced the formulation of socio-spatialities that either contributed to or hindered the production of a landscape culture that generated tensions, dissidences, and contrasts between what the market proposes and the actual experiences of so ciety. By highlighting the ways in which the commodity-landscape is employed—particularly as a strategy for real estate valorization—this dissertation invites reflection on the processes of producing a landscape culture shaped by practices and techniques associated with modern consumption.
